Homemade Aluminum Acetate Solution
An aluminum acetate solution can be made fromĀ calciumĀ acetate and potassium aluminum sulfate. Depending on the availability of these materials in your area, this can be cost effective.
To make enough aluminum acetate solution to mordant 1 kilo of fabric, combine in 3 litres of hot tap water:

150 g sodium acetate or calcium acetate

150 g potassium aluminum sulfate
This mordant can be used on its own or in combination with tannin. Calcium Acetate can also be used as a buffer to control the acidity of a dye bath.
