Natural Indigo - In Cake Form
Perfect for teachers and educators. This is the form of indigo dye that was historically made and shipped to markets around the world. These cakes are made as part of the process of extracting indigo from indigoferra tinctoria in south India. The cakes are very handy for displays and presentations where a powder is difficult to use.
The cakes contain exactly the same indigo as we sell in powdered form. To use these cakes for dyeing, they need to be ground into a powder.
Natural indigo powder is an extract prepared from cultivatedĀ Indigofera tinctoria. Indigo is the legendary source of colourfast blues. Its ability to produce a wide range of shades has made it the most successful dye plant ever known. Indigo grows all over the world but flourishes best in hot, sunny, humid areas. Indigo can give clear blues that range from the tint of a pale sky to a deep navy that is almost black. Our indigo comes from a farm in south India and is very strong (approx 40% indigotin). It reduces beautifully in an indigo vat.
For instructions see ourĀ How to Dye with IndigoĀ guide. For more information on natural dyes see ourĀ in-depthĀ Guide to Natural DyesĀ available onĀ naturaldyes.ca.Ā Also available as aĀ Printable PDF.
